Goals
Advancing the Genomics of Sarcoidosis Through Global Collaboration
Our goal is to enhance the understanding of sarcoidosis by facilitating rigorous, large-scale, and clinically relevant research in genomics and multi-omics. To accomplish this, the Multi-Ethnic Sarcoidosis Genomics Consortium (MESARGEN) has been established as an international framework dedicated to uncovering the biological mechanisms behind this complex and heterogeneous disease. The initial step involves cataloging the genetic variations associated with sarcoidosis across different populations.
A Comprehensive Multi-Omics Strategy
MESARGEN is dedicated to advancing translational and genomic research at scale, with a strong emphasis on diversity, deep phenotyping, and clinical integration. The consortium brings together large, well-characterized cohorts across multiple populations, enabling robust and generalizable discoveries.
Our approach integrates:
- Genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics
- High-throughput sequencing technologies
- Advanced bioinformatics, statistical genetics, and systems biology
This comprehensive strategy allows us to move beyond single-layer analyses toward a holistic understanding of disease mechanisms.
From Genetic Discovery to Clinical Impact
A central objective of MESARGEN is to bridge the gap between molecular discovery and clinical application. We focus on identifying the genetic and molecular determinants of key sarcoidosis phenotypes, including:
- Pulmonary sarcoidosis
- Cardiac sarcoidosis
- Cutaneous, ocular, and neurosarcoidosis
- Other extrapulmonary manifestations
By linking genomic variation to detailed clinical and molecular phenotypes, we aim to:
- Identify genetic loci and pathways driving disease susceptibility and progression
- Discover biomarkers for early diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response
- Define biologically meaningful disease endotypes
- Enable the development of precision medicine strategies and novel therapeutic targets
A Global Resource for Discovery and Collaboration
MESARGEN serves as a unique international resource, uniting scientific and clinical investigators across multiple countries. The consortium integrates data from diverse well-phenotype cohorts and collaborations with established global biobanks, creating a powerful platform for collaborative research.
Through this global network, we aim to:
- Facilitate data sharing and harmonization across populations
- Promote interdisciplinary collaboration
- Accelerate scientific discovery and translation into patient benefit
Looking Ahead
By combining international collaboration, cutting-edge genomics, and a strong translational focus, MESARGEN is positioned to redefine the landscape of sarcoidosis research. Our ultimate goal is to deliver actionable insights that improve diagnosis, guide treatment decisions, and pave the way for gene-based and targeted therapies.
